Standard Q. line: feed preservatives.

Ensuring microbiological quality control.

Mais con muffaMicrobiological quality control in the feed and animal breeding industry is of paramount importance. The resistance of micro organisms and their ability to survive even in conditions thought to prevent their development are such that it is difficult to achieve and maintain high levels of micro biological quality in the agro-food industry.

Bacteria and moulds frequently develop in many of the products used in the feed industry. Their spread is facilitated by the presence of insects, rodents, birds, high levels of moisture and suitable climatic conditions. The consequences of bacteria and mould presence are:

  • changes in organoleptic properties of feed resulting in drop in feed intake;
  • decrease in nutritive value (energy, vitamins, etc..);
  • production of toxins harmful to animal health;
  • production of new spores.

The best way to deal with the microbial contamination in products for feed use is to ensure an effective quality control program that stems the growth of micro-organisms through corrective procedures
F.I.S. has more than 20 years of experience in this sector and has made bacterial prevention and control its core business. F.I.S. knows from experience that every customer has different needs and requirements and its goal is to meet those needs with customised and cost effective solutions.

Standard Q/MB: a broad-spectrum product for synergic action

Due to its components and its pH level, this product has a fungistatic and bacteriostatic action. We therefore recommend using it:

  • on raw materials, in order to achieve prevention. By treating individual foodstuffs when they come in, you can ensure that your production plant is not contaminated by products of low microbiological quality;
  • in feed production plants for occasional treatment, especially during spring and summer months in order to prevent overheating and flowability problems in finished products;
  • on products that are seen to be of visibly poor quality upon unloading at the production plant;
  • on feed that has microbiological contamination levels within acceptable limits, but which will be stored in unhygienic structures;
  • in the poultry industry where, in addition to implementing control measure for fungal contamination, it is becoming increasingly important to tackle problems related to the presence of bacteria (e.g. salmonella);
  • on farms: the additive Standard Q./MB effectively combats the harmful effects on the health of animals and animal produce caused by the presence of mould, bacteria, and mycotoxins.

Why you should be using Standard Q./MB.

Standard Q./MB is a broad-spectrum product, composed of a blend of acids acting together synergistically. It is easy to handle as its components are considered as GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe), meaning that there are no toxic residues. It does not corrode metal structures and provides differential release of its active principles, meaning that its effect is continuous and sustained over time.

Standard Q./pH1: highly effective fungicidal and bactericidal action.

Due to its powerful fungicidal action, Standard Q./pH1 is recommended for use on:

  • at risk raw materials with high CFU counts;
  • raw materials with high water activity (> 0.85);
  • products that are easily fermentable because they are rich in enzymes and/or carbohydrates;
  • raw materials with traces of impurities;
  • products from tropical areas;
  • contaminated feed requiring treatment/salvaging;
  • feed with a long shelf-life;
  • products stored for long periods at humidity above 13.5%;
  • production plants where there is encrustation.

Due to its high surface tension, the additive Standard Q./pH1 is able to get into elbows, screw conveyors and the upper areas of silos, removing incrustations and dust and, consequently, microbial contaminants in points that would otherwise be unreachable. Standard Q./pH1 can be used periodically as a substitute for other less acidic formulations, thus inducing environmental stress in indigenous microbial flora.

Why you should be using Standard Q./pH1.

Standard Q./pH1 is a liquid and therefore offers a greater degree of penetration into vegetative cells and fungal spores. Because it is pH = 1, the organic acids are in undissociated form, which is the only active form that can penetrate into fungal cells. Finally, Standard Q./pH1 is a product with a low level of corrosion as it is subjected to a treatment process developed and patented by F.I.S.

STANDARD Q./POWDER

Standard Q/Powder contains mainly short-chain organic acids, in particular formic acid. At the same concentration, these compounds have a higher antimicrobial efficacy when present in formulations with an acid pH. Very often powdered products do not meet these characteristics, making it necessary to use higher doses to obtain reliable results, leading to expensive treatment costs.
Standard Q/Powder has an acidic pH (6.0) and its main components are present in their most active form. Low inclusion levels are sufficient to achieve good, long-lasting antimicrobial protection.
We therefore recommend Standard Q/Powder when:

  • at risk or suboptimal quality raw materials are used;
  • you wish to prevent microbiological contamination of production and/or storage facilities;
  • you wish to maximize the nutritional value of raw material: the financial losses due to metabolic activity of bacteria and mould are often underestimated;
  • your objective is a high standard of quality for long periods of storage. Over 50% of microbial contamination risks are the result of poor hygiene conditions in silos. Guaranteeing adequate protection over extended periods of time will help prevent complaints from the end user;
  • humidity control during feed production is causing high levels of relative humidity. The introduction of an effective anti-mycotic enables feed quality to be maintained at optimal levels;
  • you wish to contain insect infestations caused by poor preservation.

Why you should be using Standard Q/Powder

  • because the formulation of Standard Q/Powder is based on specific knowledge gained through years of experience of microbiological prevention;
  • because the organic acids used in Standard Q/Powder have excellent antimicrobial power due to their low molecular weight and their high volatility;
  • because, thanks to its acidic pH, Standard Q/Powder rapidly releases frees fatty acids and works quickly to salvage product that would otherwise be unusable;
  • because, due to the chemical and physical characteristics of its components, Standard Q/Powder provides antimicrobial protection for a very long time;
  • because the active ingredients of Standard Q/Powder are chemicals that present absolutely no hazard to health. Moreover, unlike similar formulations in liquid form, the handling of the product does not require any special security measures;
  • because Standard Q/Powder does not require specific application systems. Instead, it can be applied in the "traditional" manner, i.e. by adding it to the components of the feed during mixing.
